The National Head Start Family Literacy Center (NHSFLC) provides training and technical assistance to Head Start programs to improve the quality and positive outcomes of their family literacy efforts. According to the 1998 Head Start Act, family literacy has the following four components:
- Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children
- Training for parents on how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children
- Parent literacy training that leads to economic self–sufficiency
- Age–appropriate education approaches that prepare children for success in school and life experiences
