Fathers Make a Difference
FACES Findings: New Research on Head Start Outcomes and Program Quality

The Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) collects data on a nationally representative sample of Head Start programs to examine the quality and effects of Head Start on classrooms, teachers, parents, and children. Head Start staff and parents will learn from this Fathers Make a Difference graphic from FACES 2000, that when fathers are more involved, their child demonstrates more positive behavior.

Fathers Make a Difference

Less than half of Head Start children lived with both their mother and father. Whether or not fathers lived with their Head Start child, greater father involvement was related to more frequent positive social behavior and less frequent problem behavior at the end of the Head Start year.

When Fathers Are More Involved (whether living at home or not)
There are four red arrows in this figure, the first is the only one pointing up. The last three are pointing down. The text inside the first reads 'More Positive Child Behavior.' The next three are pointing downward. The text inside the first downward arrow: 'Fewer Overall Child Behavior Problem'; the second downward arrow: 'Less Aggressive Behavior'; the third downward arrow: 'Less Hyperactive Behavior.'
