Parents! Share Your "Smoke-Free Homes" Story

To promote smoke-free homes and cars, the Office of Head Start (OHS) has joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its "Care for Their Air" campaign (www.epa.gov/smokefree). This campaign encourages Head Start teachers, staff, and parents to eliminate and reduce children’s exposure to secondhand smoke. As a result, families can help children avoid serious health risks from breathing secondhand smoke, including frequent and severe asthma attacks, colds, and ear infections. To encourage providing smoke-free homes and cars, the OHS would like Head Start parents to share their stories.

Parents! Share Your "Smoke-Free Homes" Story

Two ways to share your story:

  1. Smoke-Free Homes for Head Start FamiliesWrite a simple statement. This might include ways you have eliminated or reduced smoke levels. For example, you quit smoking or only smoke outside of the home and car. Additionally, it might include: what made this experience different; what motivated you; how Head Start might have helped; and, how you have made these changes permanent. Please limit your statement to 400 words or less. You are welcome to submit a photo so that we may connect your image with your story.

  2. Star in your video. You might answer the same questions in the examples above and use video such as a MPEG and AVI file to capture your story. In describing your experience, limit the footage to 30-60 seconds.

Submissions must include your name, address, phone number, email address (if available), and Head Start program affiliation. This will allow us to link you to your story, which may be posted on the ECLKC web site.

Note: All submissions become property of the OHS and will not be returned. Additionally, the OHS reserves the right to edit them for compliance with technical and editorial standards.
