INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
TO: Head Start and Early Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies
SUBJECT: Availability of Financial Assistance to Expand Head Start Enrollment in Unserved Communities
INFORMATION: Attached for your information is a copy of a September 24, 2001 Federal Register notice announcing a competition for financial assistance to initiate Head Start services in unserved communities. Grants will be awarded to establish new Head Start services in:
- Counties (or sub-county areas) not currently served by Head Start;
- Federally-recognized American Indian Reservations and Alaska Native villages not currently served by Head Start and;
- Services for children of migrant farmworkers in States where Head Start services are not available for this population.
See Appendix A of the attached notice for the list of geographic areas currently unserved by Head Start grantees.
It is expected that a total of approximately $4,000,000 will be awarded. These funds were appropriated in fiscal year 2001 with authority to expend them in fiscal year 2002. Applications must be submitted by January 14, 2002.
