INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
TO: Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies Regional Offices, American Indian and Migrant Branches, Technical Assistance Support Centers (TASCS), Resource Access Projects (RAPS), and Head Start Teaching Centers
FROM: Associate Commissioner, Head Start Bureau
SUBJECT: Choosing Wellness (Comprehensive Health Education and Health Promotion Package)
The purpose of this memo is to alert you to the fact that you will be receiving a Comprehensive Health Education and Health Promotion package from Johnson & Johnson. This material, titled Choosing Wellness, will be mailed to you early in 1995 and deserves your immediate attention.
Choosing Wellness has been developed by Education Development Corporation (EDC) under a grant with Johnson & Johnson as a result of a public-private partnership between the Head Start Bureau, Johnson & Johnson and EDC for use by Head Start programs. It is a comprehensive approach to health education that is broadly defined and whose thrust is across components. The materials contained in Choosing Wellness are designed to help Head Start managers plan and implement a more comprehensive, tailored approach to health education that addresses local needs, the children, parents and staff in their programs.
The Choosing Wellness package being sent to you is free of charge and contains: (1) a ten minute video on Comprehensive Health Education; (2) an annotated guide to health education materials; (3) a method for evaluating individual health education materials to determine if they are viable for each unique Head Start program; (4) a planning and implementation guide for the development of a Comprehensive Health Education program; and (5) a Poster and Clip-Art on Comprehensive Health Education. All of this material cam be reproduced without prior permission.
We hope that together these materials will assist Head Start programs in preventing unnecessary illness and injury, in becoming strong health advocates, and in promoting wellness for its staff, the families and the children they serve and for the communities in which they live.
Upon receipt of the Choosing Wellness package, please examine the contents. If you have questions about the use of these materials, Dr. Madelyn Schultz is the Head Start Bureau staff member assigned to this project. She can be reached at (202) 205-8398. Once you have begun to use this material, please let us know if you find it helpful and user-friendly and how you are using it or adapting it to be most appropriate for your program.
