Abstract

In 1995, an Interagency Agreement between the Public Housing Child Care Demonstration Program and the Administration on Children, Youth and Families, made $14,000,000 available to initiate or expand full-day comprehensive early childhood services, in or near, public and Indian housing developments. In this Information Memorandum, Head Start grantees and delegate agencies were directed to the Federal Register announcement detailing the application process for these funds.

INFORMATION MEMORANDUM

TO: Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies

SUBJECT: Program Announcement for Comprehensive Early Childhood Demonstration Projects

Attached for your information is a copy of the program announcement recently published in the Federal Register which implements an Interagency Agreement between the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Public Housing Child Care Demonstration Program and the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Administration on Children, Youth and Families.

As stated in the program announcement, $14,000,000 is being made available to initiate or expand full-day comprehensive early childhood services in or near public and Indian housing developments. Eligible applicants are Head Start grantees, nonprofit child care providers, RMCs and RCs. Each applicant may apply for a maximum of $400,000 for a 17-month grant period. It should be noted that successful applicants are expected to continue the child care services with Federal, State and local child care resources after the 17-month demonstration effort is completed.

The Head Start Bureau encourages grantees whose service areas contain public and/or Indian housing developments to apply for a portion of these funds.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 60 days from the date of publication in the Federal Register.
