INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
TO: All Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies
SUBJECT: Publication of Four Training Guides
INFORMATION:
The Head Start Bureau is pleased to announce the publication of the first four Guides in the Head Start National Training Guides series. Each grantee and delegate agency will soon receive, in four separate mailings, one copy of each of the following training guides:
Engaging Parents
Health and Wellness
Building Supportive Communities
Setting the Stage: Including Children with Disabilities in Head Start
These publications are the first in a set of eight Foundation Training Guides, each designed to support your program's efforts to provide training activities relevant for all Head Start staff, parents, and volunteers. The Foundation Guides provide program-wide training activities designed to help everyone working in your Head Start program to develop and practice skills which are fundamental to quality Head Start services. Subsequent guides, known as Technical Guides, will address skills which may be targeted to individuals or groups performing more specific roles in your program, (e.g. training on the effective design and implementation of Individualized Education Programs).
All of the Training Guides reflect the belief that learning is an incremental process and that effective training requires a variety of approaches which can respond to diverse learning styles of the intended audience. The Guides are organized around skill-based objectives, and are designed to build skills essential to providing high quality Head Start services.
Within each guide you will find practical instructions and recommendations for the staff or consultant who will be delivering the training. Each Guide should be examined by your management team so that they may determine how it may best be integrated into the training plan developed and implemented in your Head Start program.
The ACF Regional Offices and the technical assistance providers for your Region are also receiving these Guides. The National Training Contractors (NTCS) will be working with the Regional Offices and the technical assistance providers in your Region to plan opportunities for Head Start programs to receive more information on using these resources.
At this time, only one copy of each Guide is being provided to each grantee and delegate agency. You may make photo-copies of the original Guides for your use. A limited number of copies of each Guide will become available later from the Head Start Information and Publication Center.
