TO: All Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies

SUBJECT: Publication of A Head Start Handbook of the Parent Involvement Vision and Strategies

INFORMATION: The Head Start Bureau is pleased to introduce A Head Start Handbook of the Parent Involvement Vision and Strategies This Handbook is a product of work begun for the Head Start National Parent Involvement Institute in 1993. Local program staff responsible for coordinating parent involvement activity are encouraged to utilize this document as a supplement to or a replacement of the earlier publication, A Handbook For Involving Parents n Head Start.

Partnership with parents has always been a cornerstone of Head Start. The Head Start Vision for Parent Involvement underscores the importance of establishing and sustaining a relationship with every family in Head Start. Based on the Parent Involvement Vision, this Handbook discusses in Part I: A Statement of Vision, Values, and Opportunities for Partnering with Parents in Head Start; and in Part II: Parent Involvement Strategies, presents a variety of step-by-step ideas for implementation.

Supporting stronger, more confident parents builds stronger, higher quality Head Start programs. The use of A Head Start Handbook of the Parent Involvement Vision and Strategies to increase the parent/program partnership is an additional new resource that all programs are encouraged to use.
