INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
TO: Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies
SUBJECT: Interim User's Guide, a reference to The National Training Guides for the Head Start Learning Community
INFORMATION: The Head Start Bureau is publishing a series of skill-based training guides which address the following content areas: Education, Disabilities Services, Health, Management, Parent Involvement, Social Services, and Transition. These guides are based on the Head Start Program Performance Standards and are an excellent resource for programs to use in developing their staff development plans.
To assist Head Start programs is using the guides, we have developed an Interim User's Guide. This resource is written in a question and answer formal end explains the process for developing the guides; describes how the guides are organized; and lists all of the technical guides. It also contains a chart, Foundation Guides At-A-Glance that summarizes the key concepts and skills included in the seven foundation guides. The final version of the User's Guide will include a separate Staff Development section and an index to the complete series of national training guides.
These training guides are packaged so that you can put the document in a binder and keep them in your resource area. Each content area has been assigned a color so that you can organize your training guides by content area. In addition, this training series was designed so that several guides can fit into one binder. I encourage you to house the training guides in a central location so that these materials are accessible to all staff.
Providing ongoing training and staff development opportunities promotes delivery of quality services to children and families. I encourage you to review the training guides that have been published and think about how your program could use these resources in providing staff development opportunities over the course of the year. You may also contact your Technical Assistance Support Centers (TASCs) and Resource Access Projects (RAPs) for assistance in using the guides.
If you have any questions or comments about these training guides, please contact Kathy Hallissey at (202) 205-8420.
