INFORMATION MEMORANDUM

TO: Head Start and Early Head Start Grantee and Delegate Agencies

SUBJECT: Adult Hepatitis B vaccine

PURPOSE: To update information in ACYF IM 95-17 about the availability of the adult Hepatitis B vaccine.

INFORMATION: In October, 1996, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded a contract to SmithKline Beecham which allows them to make available to all federal, state, and municipal agencies the adult hepatitis B vaccine at prices below state and private contract prices. Head Start programs are eligible to purchase the reduced price vaccine. They can request the vaccine be sent directly to them, or to another site where the vaccine will be administered, such as a local health department. In addition, SmithKline can help facilitate the administration of the vaccine.

The price of one adult dose of the hepatitis B vaccine is $24.57. It is available in either single-dose vials or pre-filled syringes.
