INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
TO: All Head Start Grantees and Delegate Agencies
SUBJECT: Announcement of Financial Assistance to Expand Head Start Enrollment in Unserved Areas
LEGAL AND RELATED REFERENCES: The Head Start Act, as amended, 42 U.S.C. 9831 et seq.
SUMMARY: The Head Start Bureau announces that competing applications will be accepted to expand Head Start services in communities that are currently not served by Head Start. Applications are due by July 14, 1997.
INFORMATION: In the May 14, 1997 Federal Register, the Head Start Bureau announced that competing applications will be accepted to establish new Head Start services in geographical areas not currently served by Head Start grantees. Applications are also being accepted to serve Federally-recognized Indian Reservations not currently served by Head Start and areas where Head Start services are not available for children of migrant farmworkers.
Services are not available for children of migrant farmworkers. In addition, applications are being accepted to establish new grantees to serve additional children in underserved areas in New York City. It is expected that a total of approximately $13,650,000 will be awarded to support these programs. A copy of the Federal Register announcement is attached, for your information.
This is the third of three announcements
being published this year by the Head Start Bureau to solicit
applications to expand Head Start enrollment and meet our goal of
serving an additional 50,000 children in fiscal year 1997. The first
announcement, printed on March
12, 1997 in Program Instruction ACYF-PI-HS-97-01, was sent to Head Start grantees inviting them to apply for funds to expand enrollment in the areas they currently serve. The second announcement, published on April 17, 1997 in the Federal Register, invited eligible agencies, including Head Start grantees and delegate agencies, to apply for grants to initiate new Early Head Start programs.
Please see the attached announcement for more information.
CORRECTION OF DUE DATE:
The date by which applications are due is July 14, 1997.
In the attached Federal Register, two printing errors were made concerning the due date for applications. On page 26525, the section titled "Dates" should read, "The closing date for receipt of applications is July 14, 1997." On page 26529, the section titled "D. Closing Date for Receipt of Applications" should read, "The closing date for the receipt of applications is July 14, 1997."
The Federal Register plans to publish a notice correcting these errors on May 21, 1997.
