Abstract

The purpose of this Information Memorandum is to provide information about the importance of lead screening for young children and the need for improved collaborative efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regarding lead poisoning prevention. Grantees and delegate agencies will find resources to share with all program staff and parents.

SUBJECT: Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Collaboration 

INFORMATION:

Attached to this Information Memorandum is information about the importance of lead screening for young children and the need for improved collaborative efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regarding lead poisoning prevention. In response to a report from the Government Accounting Office about the high numbers of at-risk children who are not being screened for lead poisoning, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) within the DHHS has notified all State Medicaid Directors about the requirements for lead screening for children enrolled in Medicaid. This packet of information includes the letter sent to all State Medicaid Directors, the GAO Report, as well as HCFA's response. Please share this information with all program staff and parents.
