The Head Start Program Performance Standards require programs to establish and implement a structured approach to staff training and development (45 CFR 1304.52(k)). At a minimum, this approach must include ongoing opportunities for staff to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their job responsibilities within the context of implementing the Head Start Program Performance Standards.
Professional development serves as the bridge between where perspective and experienced staff are now, and where they will need to be to meet the new challenges of guiding and supporting children and families, as well as meet the increasing staff qualifications requirements.
Highlighted in this handbook are successful strategies and promising practices for partnerships, financial assistance options, tools, and resources that Head Start programs have used to overcome some of the challenges of meeting the professional development needs of staff. Head Start, Early Head Start, and early child care programs will find this resource helpful in implementing their staff development activities.
