Abstract

Autism is a developmental disability that affects a child's verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction skills. Parents, administrators, staff, and related service providers will find the Federal definition and guidance provided in Head Start Program Performance Standard Section 1308.15 helpful in identifying autism in Head Start children.

Sec. 1308.15 Eligibility criteria: Autism.


A child is classified as having autism when the child has a developmental disability that significantly affects verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction, that is generally evident before age three and that adversely affects educational performance.
