Preschool Language and Literacy Course

Thank you for your interest in PRESCHOOL LANGUAGE and LITERACY COURSE, a 16-week, 200- to 300-level college course developed by the National Head Start Family Literacy Center at Sonoma State University through a cooperative agreement with the Office of Head Start, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through grant number 90YL0002/01.

Instructor's Guide (PDF file): Provides guidance and resources for instructors teaching Preschool Language and Literacy Course. The downloadable guide includes:

  • Overview of course content and curriculum
  • Strategies for teaching online
  • Information on teaching the course in traditional face-to-face classroom settings or as a hybrid course (i.e., combination of online and face-to-face)
  • Other instructor resources, such as an annotated bibliography, frequently asked questions, and sample grading rubric


Course Curriculum (HTML files): Includes the complete, fully developed, ready-to-teach online course curriculum in HTML format to upload into various Web distance learning applications. For previewing purposes, the course curriculum may be navigated from the webpages.

Preschool Language and Literacy Course is composed of seven modules. Each module includes the following elements: Research Overview and Main Concepts, Developmental Continuum, Required Reading (many downloadable), Activities and Assignments, and Discussion Instructions, as well as lecturettes and PowerPoint presentations.

Instructors may individualize course curriculum content. Core modules include:

  • Books and Print Awareness
  • Children's Writing
  • Learning the Code: Phonological Awareness and Alphabet Knowledge
