Families-Parent Involvement

Parents and families are key players in Head Start and Early Head Start programs. This section includes resources on various ways to maintain effective communication with parents as integral partners in their child's education. Looking for ways to engage and support family involvement? Check out resources that support parent-mentoring activities, transition and curriculum planning just to name a few.

The information and resources are related to the subjects listed below:

Center-Based*
Head Start programs are designed to serve the needs of their communities. Center-based services include options such as full-day, half-day, or a combination of program options. Resources are available in this section top help teaching staff communicate with parents and families.

Family Literacy
Head Start programs play a key role in family literacy by increasing Head Start families' access to materials, activities and services. This section provides resources that emphasize skill development for both child and parent literacy. Parent Mentoring literacy initiatives are also highlighted in this section.

Home-Based
In the Home-Based option, Head Start and Early Head Start staff conduct weekly parent visits that focus on helping parents in the role as their child's first teacher. This section provides resources that provide guidance and support with Head Start families and children in the home environment.

Ongoing Communication
The Head Start Program Performance Standards require that programs communicate with families in their preferred or primary language. Resources available here help staff respond to these program requirements that promote ongoing communication, in particular, with those who do not speak English as their primary language.

Support for Home Culture and Diversity
The Head Start Program Performance Standards require that programs provide an environment of acceptance that supports and reflects cultural diversity. Find resources that offer support for family diversity in this section.

Transition Activities
Articles here discuss positive support for children as they adjust to making easy transitions from activity-to-activity throughout the day, and from parents to teaching staff at the beginning and end of the day.
