Steps to Success Facilitator Guide Unit 1 Module 2: Head Start Child Outcomes for Preschool: Book Knowledge and Appreciation and Print Awareness and Concepts (TVI)

Mentor-Coaches, their protégés, and home visitors use a number of different strategies to support book knowledge with preschool children. Mentor-Coaches will learn from Clip 7 of the Unit 1 Tutored Video Instruction (TVI) how to conduct a debriefing session while taking a closer look at some of the instructional strategies teachers use to advance three year-olds’ book knowledge, appreciation, and vocabulary development. Some of the strategies discussed include: reading books over and over; making sure there is print in every environment; reading wordless picture books; asking prediction questions; asking questions that connect books to children’s own lives.

Print awareness and providing ample opportunities for children to write are key ingredients to early language and literacy development. Clip 8, the final clip of the Unit 1 Tutored Video Instruction (TVI), provides Mentor-Coaches with strategies for supporting and promoting print awareness while providing children opportunities to write in their own ways and use their own words. The TVI panel will share personal examples of how they emphasize print awareness and writing in their programs.
