Observation and Observation Methods
There are three methods of observation: open observation uses narrative to record the situation being observed; closed observation uses a specific tool, such as a checklist to gather information; and the combined method uses both narrative and some type of tool to document what’s being observed. Clip 2 of the Unit 2 Tutored Video Instruction (TVU) provides Mentor-Coaches with an in depth look at the role Mentor-Coaches play in the observation process. In addition, the TVI panel discusses how important it is that both Mentor-Coaches and their protégés be knowledgeable of and comfortable with various types of observation tools.
