Abstract:
Alabama State University in collaboration with Head Start grantees is developing academic and training models to support a statewide articulation agreement. This agreement helps to increase the number of teaching staff who hold a baccalaureate degree in early childhood education. Mentoring and other necessary supports are provided to participants. Alabama State University partners with the Autauga Community Action Agency (CAA), the Lowndes County Board of Education, the Montgomery CAA, and the Tuskegee-Macon County Head Start programs.

Abstract:
This collaborative project among Central State University, in conjunction with the Council on Rural Service Programs, Inc. and the Miami Valley Child Development Centers, Inc. Head Start programs, will increase the number of Head Start classroom teaching staff with four-year degrees in early childhood education. The project offers pre-professional development courses to expand the staff’s knowledge base and effectively support the learning needs of Head Start children. A major component is enhancement of services to children and families enrolled in Head Start and improving school readiness.

Abstract:
Comprehensive in its approach, this project supports current course offerings and establishes new programs to address the shortage of qualified teachers in Head Start. Head Start teachers with Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials are recruited to enroll in the Baltimore City Community College’s Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education Program. Similarly, Baltimore City Head Start teachers with associate degrees in early childhood education are recruited into Coppin’s baccalaureate degree program in early childhood education. The partnership has established sites in four Head Start Centers to provide practicum experience to students enrolled in the early childhood education baccalaureate degree program. This educational ladder ultimately will result in a significant increase in the number of center-based Head Start teachers with two- and four-year degrees in early childhood education. Coppin State College partners with the Baltimore City Head Start.

Abstract:
This project enables Head Start/Early Head Start teaching staff in Leon, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, and Gadsden Counties to increase their knowledge and skill base. Participants engage in course work and field experiences to enhance the physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development of children from birth through age five. They also create a support framework to encourage greater parental involvement in each child’s learning process. The project offers skill development opportunities related to assessment and screening for developmental services. This includes addressing services for children with disabilities; child health, nutrition, and safety concerns; mental health issues; and family partnerships.

An articulation agreement between Trenholm State Technical College and Alabama State University enables individuals with the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential to pursue an associate degree at Trenholm State Technical College. Graduates may continue their education toward a baccalaureate degree in early childhood education from Alabama State University. The College’s Head Start Teaching Technology Resource Center is a laboratory for innovation. It expands new developments in instructional technologies, which may prove particularly effective in reaching early childhood educators in rural areas. H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College partners with Montgomery Community Action Head Start, Lowndes County Board of Education Head Start, Elmore/Autauga Community Action Head Start, and Tuskegee-Macon Head Start.

Howard University offers staff development and in-service training, community literacy events and degree courses. The goal is to develop higher quality literacy services for children and their families. Ongoing support is provided to teachers who are earning baccalaureate degrees in early childhood education. Abstract:
Jackson State University (JSU) formed a partnership with six Head Start agencies to create the Center for the Advancement of Teachers Educating Youngsters (CATEY). The College of Lifelong Learning is project leader and administrator. Primary project objectives include offering academic training that leads to a baccalaureate degree in child care and family education to more than 600 Head Start teachers, teaching assistants, and program managers. The project also provides a minimum of 440 contact hours of continuing education training for all partnering Head Start agency teachers, teaching assistants, and managers. Subject areas focus on limited English proficiency, disabilities, literacy, effective teaching and learning strategies, and classroom and behavioral management.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the Guilford Child Development, the Head Start grantee for Guilford County, are collaborating on a project designed to improve the quality and long-term effectiveness of Head Start/Early Head Start classrooms by developing realistic academic training models. Project objectives include: offering a course schedule accessible to Head Start/Early Head Start staff; increasing the number of teachers with an early childhood education to 60 percent in 2009 and 70 percent by 2010, as well as the number of teacher assistants working toward an early childhood education degree by 30 percent; providing opportunities for all Head Start Center Directors to receive training in administration and leadership development; scheduling minimally four workshops, seminars, or short courses for staff and parents on current child care issues; and including a mentoring program to encourage their career development.

Abstract:
Spelman College’s Continuing Education Program and Department of Education have partnered with the YMCA Early Child Development Corporation (YMCA Head Start), the Partnership for Community Action (PCA Head Start), and Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Centers Head Start programs. This partnership provides support for a project that will improve literacy outcomes for Head Start children and families. The grant will: support 15 Head Start teachers enrolled at Spelman College to earn either an associate or baccalaureate degree in child development, specializing in early childhood development; encourage those who complete an associate degree to obtain a baccalaureate degree; establish children’s lending libraries with books written in English and Spanish; and provide a cadre of college student literacy volunteers who will read to children and assist teachers with literacy development activities in the classroom.

Abstract:
St. Philip’s College (SPC), the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and Parent/Child Inc, are collaborating on Project Advance. PCI Head Start/Early Head Start teachers are recruited to complete their course work for an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in early childhood studies at SPC. They then may transfer to and graduate from UTSA with a baccalaureate degree in language and literacy. Fourteen PCI teachers with a minimum of 18 college credits in basic education and five with an AAS degree will participate in the project. SPC student support service personnel ensure that the academic and personal needs of the participants are met. A minimum of 17 project participants will graduate after five years in the project.

This multi-dimensional project plans to increase enrollment of teachers into associate and baccalaureate degree programs and to improve the quality of Tennessee’s teaching programs overall. The project targets classroom teaching staff of the Cordell Hull Head Start agency in Nashville. Individualized educational plans are prepared for enrolled staff. The project also is initiating a mentor program to enable other area Head Start programs in Region IV to replicate this model. Abstract:
Participants have an opportunity to earn an associate’s degree in early childhood education while continuing to work full-time in Head Start classrooms throughout Washington, DC. Each participant receives a continuum of support, including mentoring via the Technical Assistance Specialist and Support Team at the University of the District of Columbia and classroom and practicum courses. Courses emphasize early and family literacy as well as relevant knowledge and teaching skills applicable to the Head Start setting. Courses are offered on campus and at satellite centers during convenient hours. The Early Childhood Leadership at the University of the District of Columbia partners with the United Planning Organization Head Start Program.
