Home Environmental Assessment
Tools to Strengthen Families and Communities

There exist many different types of interior housing conditions such as mold, mildew, asbestos, lead paint, and radon, that can negatively affect the health and safety of the homes inhabitants. Organizational leadership and family workers will find this assessment tool useful to observe and record health and safety risks, track trends in housing conditions, and identify resources and partners that can assist families in addressing these issues. Family workers who make home visits may use the results of this assessment as a general data source and planning tool while advocating for improving housing conditions.

The Home Environmental Assessment tool can be used two ways. The home visitor can complete the survey with the resident and go over the results, using the information as an educational vehicle to discuss what next steps are necessary to address issues. This method shares power with the resident to determine a level of intervention that is comfortable. Alternately, the home visitor can ask permission of a resident to walk through the interior of the residence and fill out the survey without his or her participation. Both methods can be used to determine an appropriate intervention. More>> [PDF, 1MB]
