The Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Diabetes Prevention and Treatment web site provides resources to assure that American Indians and Alaska Natives get culturally appropriate and comprehensive prevention and treatment services for type-2 diabetes, a disease that disproportionately affects American Indians. Health managers and staff in Head Start American Indian - Alaska Native Programs, as well as parents and other members of the community will find educational materials, information on professional training events, and approaches for successful prevention of diabetes on this web site.

American Indian and Alaska Native communities suffer a disproportionately high rate of type 2 diabetes when compared with other populations in the U. S. and throughout the world. Although we face significant challenges in dealing with the epidemic of diabetes, there are many new opportunities and strategies that will help all of us strengthen our clinical, public health and community approaches to the problem of diabetes.
