I Have Taken the Pledge! Now What?

The Smoke-free Homes program partnership between the Office of Head Start and the Environmental Protection Agency offers tips to parents who want to stop smoking. The flyer lists activities for parents to try instead of smoking. Head Start staff may give this tip sheet to parents to offer support and encouragement during the process to quit smoking.

Share the good news!
Tell your family and friends what you are doing and why.
Your child’s health depends on it!

Ask for support!
Ask those who are close to you to help you live up to your pledge.
Tell them it is their gift of health to your child.

A BUDDY CAN HELP!
Pick someone who will act as your supporter and help you through the rough patches. The "buddy" can do things like:

  • Watch your children for a couple of minutes if you really need a cigarette.
  • Support you in quitting, if and when you are ready to quit.
  • Remind you of why you took the pledge.
  • Treat you in the way that works best for you. For some, that it is "tough love", or "nagging", and others may need lots of kindness.

FIGHT THE URGE TO SMOKE WHEN YOU CAN’T GO OUTSIDE
The urge to smoke usually lasts 3-5 minutes.
So you just need to get through those few minutes.

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Drink a glass of water.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Brush your teeth.
  • Eat a healthy snack.
  • Chew gum.
  • Take a shower.
  • Read a magazine.
  • Call someone who will support you!
  • Play with a pen, pencil, or something that keeps your hands busy.
  • Think about why you are doing this. Your child and his or her health!
  • Make a list of why you took the pledge and read it.
