The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) Act of 1992 authorizes the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) to award grants to promote the recruitment, training, employment and retention of women in apprenticeship and nontraditional occupations. From 1994 to 2003, USDOL funded WANTO grants annually to community-based (CBOs) that delivered technical assistance to employers and labor organizations to prepare them to successfully recruit, train, employ and retain women. While prior WANTO grants produced training and resource materials, and grantees engaged in outreach activities to recruit women, the numbers of women actually placed in registered apprenticeships through WANTO grant activities were lower than USDOL expected. For two years Congress did not fund WANTO grants. Congress appropriated $972,180 for WANTO activities in the USDOL FY 2006 budget. More>>
