Geometry and Spatial Sense (Webcast #3) Baby and Ball Lesson

In this video, adults observe a 15-month-old child at play with a ball in an outdoor playground. The adults acknowledge his reactions as he tries to catch the ball as it rolls down the slide. Teaching teams and parents may learn how to use this simple activity to expose children to many early math concepts, including active exploration of the ball’s roundness.

Geometry and Spatial Sense (Webcast #3) Baby and Ball Lesson

What happened before the lesson?

Where did the idea come from?
Ball was this young child’s first word. We just wanted to observe what he would do with a ball in a new setting.

What had the children learned BEFORE this lesson?
This child walked at ten months and has played with a ball since that time, kicking, throwing, and running with it. He had never had the opportunity to be on a slide previous to this videoclip.

What did you plan to do AFTER this lesson?
Lots more play on the playground with balls and slides.

What will I do after the lesson?

How did your plans change as you taught this lesson?
I had few plans for this child. I simply wanted to see how he would react in the new outdoor environment with his favorite ball.

How would you describe the teaching that occurred using the words on the Continuum of Teaching Behaviors?
The parent and the teacher were primarily observing and ACKOWLEDGING the child’s activity.
