Measurement (Webcast #4) Car Racing Lesson
What happened before the lesson?
Where did the idea come from?
“Measuring Activities for Young Children” from Teaching Mathematics February 2004, volume 10, Issue 6, page 314.
What did you plan to do AFTER this lesson?
The parent and children will continue measuring and playing together.

What's happening during the lesson?
Objective: Children will measure how far two cars travel down a ramp using different rope measurers.
Introduction:
The parent suggested that they race their cars down a ramp to see which one travels the farthest distance.
Procedure:
- Release the car that will travel the farthest (You know this because you have already explored this BEFORE the lesson begins).
- Use the longest rope measurer and count how far it goes.
- Release the car that will travel the least distance.
- Use the shortest rope measurer and count how far it goes.
- Question, “Which car travels the farthest?”; “Which one has the biggest number?”; “I wonder why…”.

What will I do after the lesson?
How would you describe the teaching that occurred using the words on the Continuum of Teaching Behaviors?
The parent was SCAFFOLDING the older child by questioning her ideas. She was ACKNOWLEDGING the younger child’s behaviors as well.
