The Math in Books: Ideas for Teaching Staff. Highlighting Number and Operations
 

Children’s books are a valuable source of mathematical concepts and math-related vocabulary that support the development of children’s mathematical knowledge. Head Start teaching staff can use this chapter of Finding the Math in Books, Highlighting Number and Operations, to support children as they explore the concepts number (counting, quantity, comparing quantity, ordering, numeral recognition) and operations (adding, taking away, multiplying, and dividing). Six books are described and suggestions are provided for incorporating the books into activities.

Many children’s books help young children learn about number and operations. They provide opportunities for teachers to help children explore number (counting, quantity, comparing quantity, ordering numbers, and numeral recognition) as well as operations (adding— joining to, taking away—separating, multiplying, and dividing— sharing.).
