The Playwork Primer
 

Play is the foundation of children's learning and development. "The Playwork Primer" outlines the nature and scope of play for children, and defines related terms and approaches. Managers and Training and Technical Assistance specialists may find this resource useful in helping teachers support free play for young children.

Play is a set of behaviors that are freely chosen, personally directed, and intrinsically motivated. But the reality is that few of today’s children are allowed out to play freely as earlier generations were. Many have little experience with play and don't know how to get started when given a chance.  Parents want children to play freely with some adult support.  The Playwork Primer defines and describes how adults can effectively provide support as children explore what free play means.
