Head Start and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start (MSHS) programs recognize, affirm, and build on family and cultural strengths as a pathway to school readiness. This resource is based on indigenous leaders’ and families’ powerful stories of courage and hope. They share their expert advice on family and community needs and assets. The resource supports the importance of indigenous culture and language to children’s achievement in school and to long-term child and family well-being. Program staff can use the flip chart with groups of parents or with individual parents at home or in the center. Available in English and Spanish (español).

Program staff may use this cultural backgrounder to raise awareness about the Mixtec, Zapotec, and Triqui cultures. It provides general information about these families. However, it also recognizes that every family is unique and that cultural practices will vary by household and by generation. The backgrounder was created with the help of focus groups with Mixtec and Zapotec parents of young children. Available in English and Spanish (español).
