OHS Anytime, Anywhere, Anyhow: User Experience Drives Improvements to Head Start Communications

The Office of Head Start (OHS) is making big strides towards making our information available to anyone, in the locations they need it, and on the device they happen to be using. Based on information from you, our users, and trends in mobile usage, we have made big changes to the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC) and our email services, and released a mobile app.

In recent months, nearly 30 percent of users accessed the ECLKC on a tablet or mobile phone. That is why we have optimized the ECLKC so it adjusts to any screen size. Whether you're on a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, the ECLKC is presented in a way that is easy to navigate and use. In addition, this summer and fall, each of the T/TA Resources topic pages was redesigned to better serve Head Start teachers, managers, and administrators.

Our new email service improves the way Head Start emails display on your phone and computer devices. The Add to Outlook feature allows you to save invitations directly to your calendar. You also can tailor what information you see with 14 topic-based email subscription options. If you are not already one of our 30,000 subscribers, sign up now for our email updates to receive newsletters, announcements, and event invitations.

At OHS, we are using new innovations to increase your access to the right information at the right time and in the right place. For example, you can follow us on Twitter for interesting facts and helpful tips; on Facebook for a daily dose of resources for teachers and staff; and on Google+ to stay informed about our latest products and initiatives. You also can subscribe to our Newest Resources and Events and Conferences RSS feeds.

This summer, we launched the Head Start Resources app for Apple and Android tablets and smartphones. The mobile app offers easy access to our new and popular resources. Its location-enabled Head Start map makes it easy to find your closest program on the go.

Your feedback is a key part of this process. Please contact us with comments and suggestions, or to volunteer for in-depth user experience testing. You also may give us in-page feedback by answering the "Was this page helpful?" prompt at the lower left-hand side of each ECLKC content page. We owe thanks to all of our community members who have provided helpful feedback over the years.
