Supporting Families' Mental Health: A Special Focus on Maternal Depression

Depression is common. It is even more common in the Head Start and Early Head Start population. More than half (58 percent) of mothers in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project scored above a clinical cutoff for depression (Chazan-Cohen, Ayoub, Pan, Roggman, Raikes, 2007). Untreated parental depression can lead to poor outcomes for children.
