Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties
JOB SUMMARY
Prepares children’s meals to ensure that food is appetizing and nutritionally suitable. Cooks for other events, as directed. Estimates daily or weekly needs and turns in orders to the Kitchen Lead/Cook for food supplies and equipment. Maintains a clean and sanitary kitchen that meets health department standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Position Specific Duties:
- Prepares and serves food for meal service and special events.
- Maintains a clean and sanitary kitchen that meets Health Department standards. Follows USDA regulations and safe sanitation practices.
- Completes and maintains required records and reports.
- With the Central Kitchen/Lead, provides training and technical assistance to food service aides.
- In the absence of the Central Kitchen Lead / Cook assumes the duties of that position
General Duties
- Reports suspected child abuse in accordance with Oregon Statute and Head Start procedures.
- Attends training sessions and participates in training opportunities.
- Promotes and encourages parent involvement.
- Maintains the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
- Interacts with children, families and community members in a supportive and professional manner.
- Works as a team with other staff in providing services to children and families.
Additional Duties
- Serve as a backup to the Food Service Delivery Driver, delivering food to Head Start locations when this person is absent.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with food preparation in an institutional setting
- Ability to carry out oral and written directions, read, write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described
- Current driver’s license, insurance, and access to a reliable automobile during work hours for purchasing supplies
- Ability to lift 50 pounds on a daily basis
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
- Knowledge of food preparation that meets federal, state and local standards and regulations
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish good working relationships with staff
- High performance through creativity, positive spirit, and multi-tasking
- High personal integrity and sound professional ethics
Additional Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in the Oregon Central Background Registry prior to beginning employment and enrollment must be maintained throughout employment
- Post-offer fitness for duty evaluation, must be obtained within 30 days of hire date:
- TB screening
- Health appraisal
- Food handler’s card, must be obtained within 30 days of hire
- Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect training must be completed within 60 days of hire date
- Introduction to Child Health and Safety training must be completed within 30 days of hire date
Desired Qualifications
- Bilingual skills: oral and written fluency in English with fluency also in Spanish, Russian or another language that meets community/department’s needs
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works assigned schedule, and exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Work is sometimes performed in an emotional and stressful environment.
