Physical Health

I Am Moving, I Am Learning (IMIL)

I Am Moving, I Am Learning (IMIL) is designed to be an enhancement to what programs already do to support children and families. The goals of IMIL are simple, yet very powerful. IMIL seeks to increase the quantity of physical activity, and improve the type and quality of physical activity. IMIL also addresses healthy nutrition options, communication with families, and activity.

Physical activity fosters normal growth and development, can reduce the risk of various chronic diseases, and can make people feel better, function better, and sleep better. Some health benefits start immediately after activity, and even short bouts of physical activity are beneficial to any age group.

IMIL supports school readiness skills with strategies and activities for:

  • Designing active learning environments
  • Developing movement skills and concepts
  • Planning for repetition and variation of practice of motor skills
  • Facilitating self-regulation, body management, and executive function skills
  • Supporting early learning across all components of curriculum

Staff and management have to be champions of change, leading updates in policy, practice, and environments. They can especially improve standards of excellence that will enhance the health and well-being of all staff, and the children and families they serve.
